A Message from Rod Seeger, President of the UCSF Retirees Association
2010 is already well underway.  The Program Committee has some very exciting events planned for the next months.  We are
very fortunate to have such an active, imaginative committee.  At the Retirees Association Board meeting on January 27th,
we approved a plan to move forward with creating a new web page which will have many features that will enhance our ability
to serve you, and which will also enhance your ability to communicate with one another.  We are pleased about that
development.
Plans for our Spring Luncheon are in full swing.  We will hear from our new Chancellor, Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH.
She will share with us plans for UCSF and let us know what the future holds.  This should be an informative time.  We will hold
the luncheon at the United Irish Cultural Center.  This venue seems to be a good fit for our group size and for our needs.
Finally, we are very fortunate to have so many wonderful people who volunteer their time and expertise to the Retirees
Association.  All of the flyers that you received in this mailing were created, assembled, and sent by a cadre of volunteers.
All of the programs that are described on the flyers were created by another cadre of volunteers.  Your Board, which meets
every six weeks, comprises yet another cadre of volunteers.  When you participate in our activities, you add to that
expanding group of UCSF retirees who are part of us.  In a recent tabulation, it was estimated that more than 1,000
participants attended our various monthly programs last year.
I would like to hear from you if there is a way our Association can serve you better.

Improve Your Health by Taking a 2010 Health Assessment
It’s not too late to get off to a healthy start in 2010 and reap the rewards.  Retirees and their spouses or domestic partners
enrolled in a non-Kaiser medical plan are eligible to complete the “StayWell Online” health assessment at:
https://uclivingwell.online.staywell.com/includes/login/index.aspx
The health assessment is a tool for learning how lifestyle habits can affect health and well-being. After completing the online
questionnaire ― a process that takes roughly 10 minutes ― the StayWell program creates a personalized online health
assessment report.  This report can provide information on individual health risks; offer information on relevant topics related
to those risks; and provides tools and guidance for making positive health behavior changes, including follow-up wellness
coaching, when appropriate.
The 2010 incentive is a $100 gift card for retirees and a $50 gift card for spouses/domestic partners.  The cards may be
used at dozens of retailers, restaurants, specialty shops, and online stores.  (Individuals may participate in 2010 even if they
participated last year and received the incentive for 2009.)
To qualify for the incentive:
·        You must be enrolled in a UC medical plan on January 1, 2010.
·        The health assessment must be completed by April 15, 2010.
UC Kaiser Permanente members and their family members age 18 and older are not eligible to participate in the StayWell
program, but they can take a free health assessment through Kaiser’s “HealthWorks by Kaiser Permanente” at:
http://my.kp.org/ca/universityofcalifornia/healthworks/index.htm

Anne Holly, Helen Ioakimedes, Frances Larraguetta, Carol Mowbray, Gail Schlueck, Rod Seeger, Margaret Warren.

was given by Rod in the absence of the treasurer and accepted as presented.

Carol Mowbray reported on the Holiday luncheon. There were 134 attendees with 22 reservations not received. The ICC was very
accommodating with the added people. It was noted that the UCSF mail system is undergoing changes and delivery of our mail has
been sporadic. Discussion regarding and outside P.O. Box was held and it was decided to hold off on getting a box until the new
system had a chance to become more efficient.

A report on the Website committee meeting follows. Eventually our mailings will be on line with blast emails, reservations online
(including credit card payments) and a message board. It was noted that new retirees will feel that this is a good direction. The report
was accepted.

Gail Schlueck gave a report of the program committee’s meeting. They prepared a questionnaire in December and received 60
responses. January –Amish Quilt Show, View from the Bay. The Joel Gray was cancelled. February-Lovejoy’s Tea on Feb 24 filled

Margaret Warren presented a report about the budget. All funds should run thru our books. There is a significant dues excess-
perhaps we need some more projects to support. There should be a written financial policy and more than one treasurer.

Carol Mowbray gave an update on the bylaw revisions. Last year at the spring luncheon articles 1-6 were passed. The remaining
articles 8-10 will be presented at the March board meeting for discussion and to at the Spring luncheon be presented for a vote upon
the board’s endorsement.

change. The next meeting is in Santa Barbara in April. The fall meeting is in Berkeley.
